Why You Need to Clean Your Hairbrush and How to Do It?

We agree that cleaning your hairbrush does not make the top of your to-do list, right! But it is worth doing as a beauty chore for many reasons.

First, it is just as important to clean as your makeup brushes. Second, cleaning it regularly removes residue from oils, your scalp, and grime built up on the bristles.

You must agree you do not want that gunk ending up on your head. But, unfortunately, even the shed hair can make its way off, and your brush will not perform that well.

The best news is that cleaning your hairbrush is not complicated and only takes a little of your time. Here you can find steps to clean your hairbrush and comb fast.

Why Is It So Important to Clean Your Hairbrush?

When used, your hairbrush acts like a sponge, trapping residue in the bristles from the environment and your hair. For example, do you use hair care products such as conditioners or gels? Then those substances build up on your hair, and it sticks to the bristles. Yet, that is not all. It also is a magnet for shed hair, dead skin cells, and dust.

American Academy of Dermatology advises that you can shed up hundreds of hair a day. Most of that hair accumulates at the bottom of your brush. Even dust and grime from the environment settles onto your hairbrush. Now, if the brush bristles are coated with oil particles, start to stick to them.

So without regular cleaning, you deposit all that gunk back into your clean, washed hair.

How Often Should You Clean Your Hairbrush?

There are no rules set up for cleaning your brush, and it depends on the products you use and how often you use these products.

  • Do you use styling creams, hairspray, and creams in your hair regularly? Then the best is to clean your brush at least once a week.
  • If you do not use hair products, you can try to clean your hairbrush every second week.
  • Before cleaning your brush, it helps to remove the accumulated hair on the bristles every day.

How To Clean Your Hair Brush?

Today we want to share three methods on how to clean your hairbrush. The important thing is to remove the trapped hair at least once a week. Then, you can use a pair of scissors, your thin comb, or a bamboo skewer to lift out the hair. Alternatively, you can invest in a cleaning tool for a couple of dollars. Still, you need to give that brush a thorough washing at least once a month, and cleaning methods vary on the type of brush you use.

1. Method 1 – Cleaning Plastic Brushes and Combs

You can use this method with combs and vented brushes, any tool made of plastic. You will need the following:

  • A large bowl
  • One tablespoon baking soda
  • One tablespoon shampoo
  • Four cups of warm water
  • A toothbrush

Mix the shampoo, baking soda in the bowl with hot water. Take your brushes and place them in the bowl, leaving them to soak for 25 minutes. Next, use the old toothbrush and scrub the base up to the bristle for a couple of minutes to remove the gunk. Once clean, rinse it under clean water and leave it to dry.

2. Method 2 – Cleaning Plastic and Metal Brushes

You can use this method with different brushes, from your round to paddle and wet brush. Only use this washing technique with your metal and plastic brushes. You will need the following:

  • One teaspoon baking soda
  • One teaspoon shampoo
  • Half a cup of hot water
  • Old toothbrush

Place the water in a bowl and mix the shampoo with baking soda into it. Take your toothbrush and dip it into the cleaning solutions. Apply it to the bristles and base of your brush. Do it gently yet thoroughly, and if the base of the brush is squishy, avoid getting it too wet as it can cause mildew. Now dip the toothbrush in clean water and remove the soap rinsing it clean. Dry the brush with a towel and allow it to dry with the bristles placed down.

3. Method 3 – Cleaning Natural Bristles and Wooden Brushes

If your brush has a wood handle or natural bristles, this method works well. It is a gentle technique to keep your delicate brush clean. Grab the following ingredients:

  • Five drop Tea Tree Essential Oil
  • An old toothbrush
  • Half a cup of hot water

Add the drops of the essential oil to the water and stir. Dit your toothbrush in the solution and gently brush it over the handle and bristles. But do not use too much of the mixture as you want to keep your hairbrush as dry as possible. When finished, wipe the brush with a clean, dry cloth and leave the bristles facing down to air dry completely.

What Is The Best Method To Use To Clean a Brush?

After removing all the hair from the bristles, you can hold the brush by the handle and swirl it around in warm water. Next, place a few drops of shampoo on the bristles and use a toothbrush to scrub it from the bristles to the base. Finally, rinse clean with water and leave it to dry.
